How to Compare Two Environments Side by Side

General tracking gives you a running record of how you feel over time (see How to Track Patterns in Your Environment for that approach). But sometimes the question you actually have is narrower: does this specific environment feel different from that one? A direct, structured comparison between two environments answers that faster than an open-ended log.


When a Direct Comparison Beats General Tracking

A side-by-side comparison is the better tool when:

  • You already have two specific environments in mind: your bedroom with the router on versus off, home versus a place you regularly stay, one room versus another.
  • You want an answer to one specific question, not a general audit of your whole environment.
  • General tracking has started to feel noisy or inconclusive, and you want to isolate a single variable instead.

A peer-reviewed review of the research on individual electromagnetic sensitivity found self-report alone is notoriously hard to interpret without this kind of structured comparison data. That is exactly what a direct A-versus-B test is built to produce.


Choose Your Two Environments

Keep it to exactly two at a time. Comparing three or more environments at once makes it difficult to tell what is actually driving any difference you notice.

The two environments should differ in the one thing you actually want to test, and be as similar as possible otherwise. If you are testing whether the router matters, keep your bedtime, your room, and your routine the same, and change only the router.


Run the Comparison

Alternate rather than block. Rather than a week in environment A followed by a week in environment B, alternate between them as often as practical: router off one night, on the next. Rate the same few things each time, on the same simple scale, so your entries for A and B are actually comparable side by side rather than described in different terms each time.


Read the Comparison Honestly

Look for a consistent gap between the two environments, not a single good or bad day. One dramatic night tells you very little on its own.

Consider what else changed between A and B that is not the variable you are testing. A small but consistent difference held across several rounds of comparison is more meaningful than one standout instance in either direction.
